As over 30,000 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) teachers went on strike on Monday, many school activities will be affected. One of them being athletics.

According to Athletic Director Greg Venger, all games will be put on hold during the strike. Along with athletics, other extracurricular activities such as clubs will be put on hold too.

Not only will this effect LAUSD schools, but also charter schools like Granada Hills Charter High School who have games scheduled against these schools.

There’s been a rumor that there is a potential of seasons being canceled, but that is false. When the strike ends, all the games missed will be treated as if they never were scheduled. If time permits there is a possibility of missed games being made up.  Since these missed games will be treated as if they never happened, the strike will have little effect on playoff seeding. The only effect is that a team will have less time to improve it’s seeding.

The reason why athletics are affected by the strike in the first place is because coaches are considered to be part of the teachers union. Also many coaches are  teachers themselves, and the chances of a teacher crossing the picket line is slim.

Even though not being able to play is difficult, student athletes are still supporting the teachers. “It sucks that we are going to have to postpone some games, but I think my main focus is on supporting LA teachers. Basketball is important to me, but not as important as my teachers,” Lisandro Ortega expressed.

“We understand the situation going on with the teachers because we as players care about our education and playing a sport to represent our school, but without teachers we won’t have an education. We are with them 100 percent,” an anonymous student athlete said.

Athletics are one of many things heavily affected by this strike. But still, many are willing to put that behind them to support the teachers.
